KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio is Seattle’s NPR news station. We’re seeking an experienced labor and economy reporter (REPORTER 1).

Here’s a look at the ideal candidate:

You stay a step ahead of developments in Seattle’s evolving economy to tell the story of how our region is changing.

You spot and report on labor trends, from people leaving the workforce to jobs in high demand. You cover unions and workers’ rights, along with efforts to unionize at big players like Amazon and Starbucks. You tell the stories of how labor shortages are reconfiguring industries. You look for stories about employees in search of work that better aligns with their values or reflects a better work-life balance, and the policies employers enact toward that. You dig into efforts to improve equity in the workplace, exploring solutions and setbacks.

You report on how companies and employees are faring in industries hardest hit by the pandemic. You tell stories about their struggles and how some evolve. You look for emerging trends and signs of resilience.

You turn around enterprise and breaking news stories for both broadcast and digital.  You work closely with the growth and development reporter and collaborate with other members of the content team to report on various platforms. You excel at cultivating sources.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Identify and craft deeply reported audio and digital stories on a beat.
• Produce scoops on that beat.
• Contribute news reports to daily newscasts and on various platforms.
• Appear on KUOW talk shows and at live events to present and discuss reporting.
• Active engagement with social media and source networks as a reporting and distribution tool.
• Meet daily filing schedule that requires occasional evening and weekend work.
• Work closely with editors and content producers on plans that articulate a vision and strategy for coverage of a beat.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements include:

•Bachelor’s degree and three years of professional broadcast journalism experience including specific position requirements relating to news writing, radio production and audio editing; or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

•Background in news writing, radio production, and audio editing software.
•Track record of producing enterprise stories with impact.
•Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and check facts.
•Impeccable journalistic integrity and editorial judgment.
•Ability to manage several projects concurrently
•Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to professionally represent the station.
•Familiarity with and appreciation for public radio style programming.
