Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism (www.journalism.columbia.edu) is seeking a named professor of Journalism whose research and teaching would focus on issues of race relations, diversity and equal rights, primarily in the United States.  

The holder of the professorship would also serve as the leader of the Ira A. Lipman Center, which convenes leaders in journalism and civil and human rights and conducts research around social justice issues. Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to influence the media and public discussion about coverage across lines of difference.

The school seeks a professor who will be a candidate for tenure. That means someone who has the ability to produce a body of substantial work that will make a significant contribution to the field. The Journalism School embraces diversity, so we seek candidates with the ability to work with and attract dynamic and diverse groups of faculty, staff and students. 

The Ira A. Lipman Center provides leadership to the journalism community by informing and shaping the ways in which we see, understand, research and report about race, diversity and civil rights. The director's responsibilities include informing the public, convening leaders in the field, conducting research, designing curricula and developing student activities inspired and informed by the Center's work. The Center also honors journalists who have produced exemplary work in this area with awards and fellowships, selected on a competitive basis.

As a full-time member of our faculty, the Lipman Professor will teach at least one course each semester, often but not exclusively focusing on the area of race relations, diversity and equal rights. Teaching duties include core classes in Writing and/or Reporting methods and advisory roles on master's projects and theses.  In service to the school, the professor will work with faculty and staff to continue to improve the curriculum, read applications, serve on faculty committees as assigned, and otherwise advise students.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate scholarly and/or professional accomplishments that give them the ability to teach graduate students. Candidates should also have professional experience in digital journalism techniques and the ability to integrate those skills with other forms of journalism. They must be familiar with digital workflow and modern tools used to create and distribute content on various platforms. A work history that shows a capacity to innovate and to be nimble in a fast-changing news environment is required.

A bachelor's degree is required.

Hiring Salary Range: $140,000 - $200,000
