Job Description: The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Journalism to start in August 2024. The successful candidate will teach courses such as news writing, journalism business and ethics, and reporting to undergraduate journalism majors and others interested in the field. This is a three-year contract position, renewable upon successful review and instructional needs.
Qualifications: Successful candidates will have several years of newsroom experience, preferably in writing, editing, producing or content management. The ideal applicant will be proficient in writing across platforms, fluent in broadcast and AP styles, and approach journalism with a digital-first mindset. Sought-after candidates will have robust portfolios showcasing reporting, writing/editing, social media, and storytelling skills across platforms. Candidates with skills in data journalism, data visualization, or web development are also encouraged to apply. Teaching experience is preferred. All successful applicants will demonstrate an aptitude for coaching young journalists in a professional or academic setting.The Newhouse School is committed to diversity in faculty and staff hiring, student recruitment, curriculum, and ideas. Job Specific Qualifications: A bachelors degree is required. A masters degree is preferred.
Responsibilities:
Teach three courses a semester, including Cross-media News Writing, Business and Ethics of Journalism, and other courses based on experience and departmental needs.
In addition to teaching, successful candidates should expect a variety of service duties, including: career advising of undergraduate and graduate students; department, school and university committee service; and some community and professional outreach.
