SENIOR ACQUISITIONS EDITOR FOR ECONOMICS, FINANCE, AND BUSINESS, MIT Press, to acquire and develop books in economics, finance, and business; and oversee an existing list of titles. Will commission approximately twenty-five new projects each year with an emphasis on field-defining textbooks and monographs and high-impact trade books, and project-manage approximately the same number of titles through the publication process annually; determine the need for and commercial viability of proposed book projects; evaluate queries, proposals, and manuscripts from authors/agents to identify prospective projects; arrange for projects to be independently peer-reviewed; consult with qualified academics to ensure the resulting publishing program reflects MIT's standing among research universities in the field; build the Press's networks; seek out diverse and underrepresented perspectives; draft and prepare external contracts and negotiate terms; ensure authors meet contractual terms; review the backlist for revision opportunities; collaborate with others to evaluate potential and costs for prospective projects and ensure their efficient production; prepare production estimates, P&Ls statements, and publishing plans; present book projects to the editorial board and Press marketing and sales staff; prepare assessments of the list, list profiles, and other materials; and perform other duties as needed.
REQUIRED: bachelor's degree, preferably in economics, finance, business, or related field; five years' journalistic/editorial experience; track record of book acquisitions, including textbooks in economics or related field; excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong negotiation skills; knowledge of publishing contracts and terms and the higher education community; ability to work with academic authors; and discretion and judgment with confidential information/issues.
